Last summer I was ill and required steroids for a period of time. I was homebound, but my brain was racing with ideas for a quilt piece. I knew I wanted to do connecting white circles because they felt calming to me. Each motif came to me when I would try to rest. The first circle on the left I called “The Wheels Coming off the Bus” because the steroids made me feel so bad. The second one is made with an Irish linen pillow case that was given as a wedding gift to us 50 years ago. The hummingbird is a nod to our love of nature. The fourth piece is a representation of an art installation outside at the NC Museum of Art. The last circle on the right right are my “Three Grand Feathers” and the small feathers underneath are their supporting feathers. This piece is best displayed on a dark grey background. During our annual July beach trip, our grandkids wanted to get up early to watch the sunrise. Since Holden Beach faces south, the sun rises over the beach houses and dunes. As the kids waited expectantly, they stood arm in arm. We grabbed a quick photo on our phone. The photo showed this sunbeam shining down on them and I knew I wanted to do a thread sketch of this moment. I have been fascinated by the Sleeping Beauty story since I was a child. At first by the romantic elements, the fairies, the blessings and the curse, the prince charming. Later, I thought how lucky she is to be able to sleep and not go to school! But it was as I grew up and became an adult that I understood the symbolism of this initiation tale. It is the story of a 15-year-old girl who pricks herself with a spindle - in flowery language, the first blood means that she becomes a woman. In full physical growth, but very vulnerable, she is not ready to assume this part of herself. She closes herself in a dream, in an impenetrable castle as long as she is immature and not ready for love. Do not look for the prince in this picture! The prince is in her head and he will arrive when she decides. And the story took me back to my own doubts and indecisions as a teenager.
